Serbian police, MUP, says it has arrested 10 people on charges relating to bribery and abuse of office. According to a statement, MUP officers, in an operation coordinated with the Special Prosecution, took into custody lawyers Nebojsa P. and Slavoljub M., police officers Jugoslav K., Natasa K. and Zika Z., doctors Mirjana T., as well as the lawyers' clients Ljiljana P., Snezana B. and Drasko K., “with the aim of cracking down on corruption, after months of police work.” Police, lawyers arrested in corruption crackdown The Defense Ministry stated that two doctors from Belgrade's military clinic, VMA, had been taken in for questioning and that one of them would be remanded in custody for a further 48 hours. The lawyers, according to the police, are suspected of having run a criminal group in Belgrade since October 2007 that the three arrested police officers were also part of, which is suspected of committing several serious crimes relating to bribery and abuse of office. Nebojsa P., as the longest serving lawyer, planned to use his contacts in the prosecution and courts to ensure that Ljiljana P., Snezana B. and Draska K., had privileged positions in a criminal case, the prosecution said. The lawyers allowed these people access to information on certain cases in exchange for money. As a result, a number of individuals were set free or had charges against them dropped, read the statement. Slavoljub M., previously employed with the MUP, received falsified medical documentation from Mirjana T., before conducting criminal activities through an organized crime group that included a number of police officers. The MUP said it will continue looking into the case to identify all those tied to the criminal group, adding it will keep the public informed about the results on a regular basis. The Defense Ministry for its part said it had taken all the necessary measures, "and will continue to do so in order to counteract any further irregularities or abuses of power", the statement continued. It was also stated that “neither the head of the VMA nor anyone from the Defense Ministry has or will protect criminals.” The ministry stressed that it would be taking all the necessary measures to protect its interest, including the protection of its rights before judicial institutions.
