Publicist Mirko Djordjevic says the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) has never before been left without a patriarch, adding that this type of situation is very serious. Commenting on the current goings-on at the SPC, Djordjevic, a professor of comparative literature, told B92 that the new patriarch would be chosen from among the active archbishops who had been heads of their parishes for at least five years. "SPC facing serious problems" He confirmed that the SPC had different interest groups fighting for their influence, even at this moment in time, and explained some of the ways in which the patriarch could be replaced. "It can happen in the sad event of his death leaving the patriarchal throne vacant, or if Patriarch Pavle agreed to call a new assembly of the SPC that would elect his successor", said Djordjevic. He added that there were no other possibilities because "the patriarch is defined by the Constitution as a specific institution, and he can not be replaced while he is still alive".
