Boris Tadic says he has held informal talks with the Socialists and proposed the formation of a socially responsible government guaranteeing a better life for its citizens. According to a statement from the president’s press service, Tadic said the citizens' electoral will should be respected, and that the “For a European Serbia” list found a government with the SPS that would continue to uphold the principles of EU integration, the defense of Kosovo, economic development and social justice, completely acceptable. “Kostunica punishing Serbia” Tadic said that a clear majority of citizens had voted for a strong and stable Serbia with a clear European perspective, and not for an isolationist government that would be led on the face of it by Vojislav Kostunica, but whose real chief would in fact be Vojislav Seselj. “At the elections, the citizens didn’t vote for difficult post-election mathematics that would re-tailor the citizens’ will, and dramatically change the strategic course of the country. During its elections campaign, the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) didn’t tell its voters that it would be implementing Seselj’s policies, and now they are fending off an electoral fiasco by manipulating and changing the will of the citizens,” said the president. He claimed that “because Serbia denied him its trust, Kostunica now wants to punish Serbia.” “Therefore, I will defend the will of the people and the strategic determination they confirmed with their votes on two separate occasions in the space of just a few months, using all possible democratic means,” Tadic underlined. Boris Tadic (FoNet, archive) DS warns DSS against "handing" Belgrade to SRS The Democratic Party (DS) says it will be “dangerous” if Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica “hands” Belgrade to the Radicals. “It will be dangerous if Kostunica succeeds in his goal of handing Serbia’s most important center—Belgrade—to Aleksandar Vucic and the Serb Radical Party (SRS), during whose leadership, Belgraders were evicted from their flats, threatened with guns, and put on hit lists for journalists and political opponents,” the DS says in a statement. The DS states that the victory of the “For a European Serbia” list can not be obliterated by Kostunica’s post-election manoeuvring. “It is the height of irresponsibility to allow bitterness and anger to motivate Kostunica to turn towards a coalition with Seselj that leads Serbia back to harmful Radical policies and the hell of the nineties,” the statement reads. The DS states that the “For a European Serbia” list won in Serbia, Vojvodina and a huge number of cities, showing that the determination for a European path has matured in society. “The new government will therefore be a government for a better life, a government that will encourage economic development, guarantee social justice and lead Serbia towards the EU,” the statement concludes.
