The U.S. expects the new Serbian government to be clearly oriented towards a European future, says U.S. Ambassador Cameron Munter. Munter said that the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) in a coalition with the pro-European parties could contribute to the country’s European future, while he deemed the possibility of a SRS-DSS-SPS coalition “surprising,” given that it “wouldn’t be in line with the people’s will at the elections.” “U.S. expects pro-European government” “At the elections, the Serbian citizens clearly chose Europe and their country’s European future. We expect and hope that a Europe-oriented government capable of meeting the needs of its citizens will be formed, in keeping with that clearly expressed will,” said the ambassador. He pointed out that the new Serbian government, “even with the Socialists, if orientated towards Europe, could be progressive and contribute to the resumption of Euro-Atlantic integration.” “The Socialists could play a very positive role in such a government, by dealing with matters that could help the country in its further progress towards Europe, such as social problems, pensions… which is consistent with the orientation towards a strong economy and a European future,” Munter pointed out. Stating that the details of potential cooperation between the Socialists and the pro-European parties were a matter for those involved, the ambassador voiced his confidence that it could contribute to Serbia’s European future. “I believe that it can be done, that it is very possible, and that it could contribute to good relations with Europe, and the continuation of Euro-Atlantic integration,” he said. Munter said that the main issue during the elections had been Europe and the country’s European future. “The answer the citizens gave was very loud and surprisingly strong, that they want a European future. People voted for the opening of economic perspectives, for friendship, cooperation, openness, and I hope that they’ll get a government that will provide them with those values,” he stressed. The U.S. ambassador called relations between Serbia and the U.S. “essentially healthy,” and expressed his confidence that with the strengthening of economical and cultural ties, “they will get better and better” with time.
