According to the Culture Ministry, around 100 temporarily accredited foreign journalists have applied to follow today’s elections. Today’s ballot is being monitored by 12 domestic and foreign organizations. Foreign reporters, observers follow elections While interest in the U.S. is low, Russian and Croatian media, as well as the business community in those countries, are very interested in the outcome, according to journalists from those countries. The low level of interest in the U.S. has been attributed to that country’s own ongoing election campaign. American journalist David Marash expects the results of the Serbian vote to carry much less impact than before, as a result. “Sadly, interest is low. Not much is even known about your elections because the U.S. is preoccupied with its own elections. It seems to have ignored the rest of the world, for whom the elections will have the greatest ramifications,” said Marash. In Russia, however, media interest is very high, both in political and business circles. “The media is constantly sending back reports from Serbia to show people what life is like there now, and how the political situation is developing. Our TV station alone sent four journalists to cover events such as the parliamentary and presidential elections, and the declaration of Kosovo independence,” said NTV correspondent Vladimir Kobyakin. Kobyakin added that, to put this in perspective, “only two journalists are covering events in the U.S.” The great interest in Russia is ascribed to the need for Serbia to have a stable government and parliament, as this is the only way that it can be a reliable partner for cooperation, and a secure market for capital investment. Croatian media is also taking a great interest in the Serbian vote. This is, above all, due to the prospects for economic cooperation with Serbia, since, as they say, they do not believe that there will be any further incidents or conflicts.
