President and head of the “For a European Serbia” list Boris Tadic has received a written death threat. According to daily Blic, which claims to have seen the letter in question, Tadic, DS, is warned that, among other things, scores will be settled with him “for betraying the country, and that as a proven traitor of the Serbian people, he will receive what he deserves—a bullet in the head.” Tadic receives death threat letter “Bear in mind, you traitors alone, that the most severe crime is betrayal of a nation and state, and that is exactly what you are doing. And, do not be so sure that the hand of justice won’t reach you with the harshest possible penalty,” states the letter, one of the many that are claimed to arrive at the president’s address. The Public Prosecution has responded by announcing that it will take measures to uncover the senders. The prosecution is examining the letter’s contents, and has announced that it is familiar with the threats to the president, and that the competent authorities are doing everything in their power to uncover the culprits. Tadic said that he expected as much from the authorities. “I can’t comment on these matters, I’ll leave that to the authorities. What I can say is that we can’t have this atmosphere of a lynch-mob in Serbia any longer,” he said. The president called on politicians to watch what they were saying during the electoral campaign. “The lynch-mob atmosphere, violence, murder, belligerence, was something we thought had been consigned to the past, and which there will be no more of after these elections. The authorities will do their job, law and order in Serbia will be upheld. It has to be made clear that all those involved will be prosecuted. I call on politicians to restrain themselves, and not to create bad blood just for the sake of the odd percentage point here or there, and turn people against each other,” Tadic appealed. Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic told B92 that the threatening letter should be taken seriously. “I think the prosecution should approach this letter with the utmost care, bearing in mind the posters that appeared on the streets of Belgrade last weekend. In any case, one of the reasons why I support Serbia’s European integration is for our security structures, prosecution and courts to be stronger,” said Dinkic. The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) also condemned the threats. Journalists asked whether the rhetoric the DSS had been employing in the course of the current campaign could have inspired such measures. “You’ll have to ask those who conduct dirty campaigns. We don’t conduct dirty campaigns,” said DSS spokesman Andreja Mladenovic. Following the appearance of posters marking Tadic and Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic out as enemies of the state, the prosecution has already sent an application to the authorities for evidence to be collected, and the perpetrators to be identified.
