Political analysts believe that signing the SAA with the election campaign in full swing will undoubtedly affect the election results. However, they say that it is still unclear to what extent it will weaken or strengthen the pro-European bloc or the other parties. Analysts: SAA will affect election outcome Strategic Marketing researcher Svetlana Logar expects the parties who have thus far campaigned for Serbia’s further European integration to be the chief beneficiaries. According to Logar, although the majority of the electorate is in favor of closer European ties, there has also been much confusion because of the messages linking the Kosovo question and European integration sent out by certain parties. “Signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) could clear a lot of things up, because whenever a concrete step is taken, things start to become clearer,“ she said. “After this, the EU will certainly not send any message that Serbia has recognized Kosovo, which has thus far been the argument of certain parties. The status quo creates the most confusion, and in that sense, clarifying the situation is useful,“ Logar points out. She says that it will soon become very clear that signing the SAA has absolutely no effect on Kosovo’s status, which could have a bearing on pro-European oriented citizens who have had an ambivalent attitude towards the EU because of the contradictory messages coming from Serbian politicians with regards to the agreement and Kosovo. President of the Center for Free Elections and Democracy’s (CeSID) executive board Zoran Lucic believes that signing the SAA will bolster both blocs, and that the only question is to what extent party representatives will be able to articulate this in the media, and turn it to their advantage. “That’s an open question, to what extent they’ll be able to exploit this information, and I think they’ll both draw benefits from it. That’s why turnout will be higher at these elections,“ predicted Lucic.
