Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci says that Kosovo enjoys great support inside the UN. Informing the Kosovo government of the UN Security Council session and the meetings he had in New York, Thaci said that Kosovo had received support because of the policies the government was leading both at home and abroad, by fostering friendly relations with its neighbors and cooperation with international institutions, KFOR and the new EU mission. Thaci: Kosovo supported in UN The Kosovo prime minister said that his visit to New York had been useful as far as lobbying for recognition of Kosovo independence was concerned. He said that he had received the necessary support during his meetings with representatives of Latin-American states and the countries of the Islamic Conference. Thaci said he expected the process of recognition to intensify after the new Kosovo constitution came into force. Speaking about the intentions of, in his words, “the neighboring state of Serbia,” to hold local elections in Kosovo, Thaci said that that had been an inevitable topic in New York. He called on Kosovo citizens to overcome those pretensions with moderation and stoicism. Thaci said the position of the Kosovo government was clear, that those pretensions were illegal and that the results of those elections would be illegitimate and would not be recognized by anybody. Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema today in Rome said that he was very worried about Balkan stability that, according to him, could be threatened by “unfinished business” in Kosovo. “We are very concerned about the Balkans because the Kosovo question is very sensitive, capable of fuelling nationalist feelings in Serbia and isolating that country. That would be a very serious instability factor for the whole of the Balkans,” D’Alema told the Italian version of the American channel CNBC. D’Alema, who supported both Kosovo independence and Serbia’s urgent and unconditional membership of the EU believes, according to the ANSA agency, that in Kosovo “a very open and delicate game is being played” in which “Italy could play an important role.”
