State Dept.: NATO staying in Kosovo

NATO will continue its mission in Kosovo because it is “of key importance, not only for the Alliance but also for the UN and EU,” says a top U.S.. official. During a session of the sub-committee for European affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives, Under Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs Daniel Fried stressed that KFOR was determined to continue its activities in Kosovo, reports Voice of America. It is especially important that the UN and EU continue to act as stability factors in Kosovo, and that UNMIK is gradually replaced by the EU mission,” he underlined. “It has to be stressed that after the declaration of Kosovo independence there has been no widespread violence that was initially feared, there have been no refugees, displaced persons or any destruction of cultural heritage. Dangerous threats to Kosovo’s stability still exist, but we are heading the right way and making progress every day,” Fried added.
