Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) leader Vuk Draskovic says the May 11 elections will be “a referendum, even more crucial than the one held in September 2000.” He told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that the position of the “For a European Serbia” coalition, of which the SPO is a member, is today rather more awkward. “Eight years ago we had a referendum to fight Slobodan Milosevic, May 11 is a referendum for a census on Serbia’s future,” said Draskovic. "May 11 more important than September 2000" “The position of the pro-European bloc today is complicated and more difficult because of Vojislav Kostunica and Velimir Ilic’s remarriage to the Radicals,” the SPO leader pointed out. “Our task is bigger: for the 'For a European Serbia' list, together with the Hungarian coalition, some minority communities and the LDP to gain a parliamentary majority,” he explained. “Serbia no longer has the time or strength for one more disaster. I don’t even dare mention the implications of a political marriage between SRS and DSS-NS, which would be more than a catastrophe, it would kill all hope,” Draskovic warned. “If Serbia on May 12, 2008 wakes up on May 12, 1991, there will be nothing left in this country to restore. Because, war crimes and depriving millions of peoples of years can’t be fixed. That is why these elections are like Hamlet in terms of destiny—to be or not to be,” Draskovic summed up.
