President of the CoE’s Committee of Ministers Jan Kubis has expressed his hope that Belgrade’s pro-EU orientation will be confirmed at the coming elections. Kubis said that regional development would be discussed during his scheduled visits to Belgrade and Pristina, planned for late April, according to Radio Free Europe. According to statements, no resolutions are due to be adopted regarding the issue. A debate on the matter was recently added to the original agenda of today’s scheduled session in Strasbourg. Balkans remain stable CoE Secretary General Terry Davis says that the Balkans have not been destabilized by Kosovo’s unilateral independence declaration. “Nothing has been done with the intention of destabilizing the Balkans,” Davis told a press conference. He was asked whether the Balkans had been destabilized by Kosovo’s independence declaration, the Greek blockade of Macedonia in NATO, and the snap elections called in Serbia and Macedonia. The Council of Europe secretary-general did not want to comment on the possible outcome of the looming parliamentary ballot in Serbia, stating that he was convinced that the election process would be conducted in the best way possible. “I cannot comment on who I would like to win, or who should win—that would be interfering in internal matters. My job is to cooperate with all who come to power after the elections in a member-state, not to comment on the election results,” Davis underlined.
