Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, DSS, says there is room for optimism when it comes to the final solution of the Kosovo status. Kostunica, who spoke after an election rally in Cacak yesterday, also said that the "events around Kosovo are not a finished story". Kostunica: Kosovo story not over "Many thought that time would settle things, that Serbia would acquiesce, while the world would accept a serious violation of international law – but this is not what happened." "The very fact that, by not recognizing Kosmet's independence, some 150 countries stand on Serbia's side, speaks volumes," he told a local television station. Kostunica added that a serious and difficult problem has been created, since "someone wanted to make a new state there, only, not for the sake of the Albanians, but for the sake of NATO interests". "Now, when it comes to the Kosovo problem, things are looking increasingly bad for those who have recognized independence, and much better than expected for Serbia. Therefore I believe there is room for our optimism," the outgoing prime minister said. Kostunica described the province as being ruled by confusion, unemployment and corruption, "with the only thing functioning there is the U.S. base of Bondsteel". Another issue that was raised in the interview was the Hague trial of the Serb Radical Party (SRS) leader Vojislav Seselj, and Kostunica's professional opinion. The prime minister, who is a constitutional lawyer, said the process is "fairly unusual". "In a strange way, the prosecution witnesses turn into defense witnesses. It is also strange that the process has dragged on for so long. A logical question arises as to the purpose of all that," Kostunica, whose party is rumored to be mulling a post-election coalition with the SRS, concluded.
