President Boris Tadic, DS, has left the door open to post-election cooperation with both the DSS and the LDP. Tadic said that he could work with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) “if they truly return to the European path,“ and with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) if they change their position on Kosovo. Tadic leaves post-elections options open The president and Democratic Party (DS) leader said that he saw no chance of his party entering a coalition with the Serb Radical Party (SRS), while the Socialists would have to make big changes to their policies for them to be an acceptable partner. He explained that he was prepared to forget all the insults and accusations from the election campaign, and form coalitions with all parties that were for a European future and the preservation of Serbia’s integrity. Tadic said that there were no desirable or undesirable partners, only those with whom it was possible to achieve the aims inherent to the five principles the previous government had been formed on. “I’m interested in political practice, not messages, as all those who say that they want to join Europe need to show it. The desire for the European road does not manifest itself by saying—let’s reject the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), which is the basis for EU membership, and which defends Serbia’s integrity and recognizes Resolution 1244,” explained the president. He said that he expected the European bloc to win at the May 11 ballot, because it was important for people, and because prior to elections, voters always stopped and asked themselves what they would personally gain from the party they voted for, and whether that party could finish the job that was important for the country and for them. “Policies that have nothing to do with people’s lives are failed policies. Policies that sound good, but are hollow, have no future. Only policies that are based on people’s need and on real life have a chance of success,” said Tadic, adding that the electorate knew fine well that Europe was not paradise on Earth, but that it was the solution to many of life’s problems. On the subject of the DS’s candidate for prime minister, the president said that he was searching for the right person for the job, a person who would be responsible for “reforming the country economically, insisting on the establishment of an independent judiciary, tackling crime, and building roads.” Asked whether the “For a European Serbia” list would nominate its candidate for prime minister before the elections, he replied that he would decide “in accordance with the task, and that was EU membership, improving living standards, and preserving the country’s territorial integrity.” “That’s an identikit of the future prime minister on the basis of which we’ll seek the right candidate. And everyone’s in the running, all those that have been in the past, and new ones that will appear, so long as they're capable of tackling these new challenges,” Tadic explained.
