NGO leaders and activists came under physical attack yesterday in Strpce as they were leaving a local restaurant. President of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights Sonja Biserko confirmed the news to Beta. Biserko comes under attack in Serb enclave Biserko said that a group of citizens had attacked her and other NGO representatives, throwing stones and eggs at them. She claims that the security services and a part of the Serbian government stand behind the attacks. “Clearly, the security services have been keeping an eye on what we’re doing in Kosovo, and organized a spontaneous gathering of citizens. A group of people came after us, but the international police stopped them,“ the NGO official described. According to Biserko, the problem is that UNMIK does not control the enclaves, thus creating a vacuum “where the security services operate on the instructions of a section of the government.“ NGO representatives have been in Kosovo for some weeks now, visiting Serb enclaves and promoting a project for establishing dialogue between Serbs and Albanians in the province. Earlier this week, the Helsinki Committee president criticized the authorities in Belgrade after the troubles in Kosovska Mitrovica, claiming they were breaching Resolution 1244. In Strpce, she was accompanied by Center for Cultural Decontamination President Borka Pavichevic, Belgrade Circle President Obrad Savic, and Social Democratic Union Vice-President Vera Markovic.
