A conference was held yesterday to discuss the basic political ideas of the late prime minister, Zoran Djindjic. The conference was organized by the Democratic Party Research-Publishing Center and the Dr. Zoran Djindjic Fund. Conference held on Djindjic’s legacy It was stated at yesterday’s conference that Djindjic had been a visionary of new political theory and practice, and a symbol of Serbia’s new image. The basic characteristic of his philosophy and policies, according to the conference participants, was that he constantly linked theory, philosophy and political practice with concrete pragmatic decisions. “The pragmatism which he adopted had two characteristics, I quote. The first was his readiness to learn from the mistakes of others, and the second was to focus on problem solving – which means that if you can’t solve a problem, do not disregard the problem based on views and approaches thus far, but question those views and approaches,” sociologist Zagorka Golubovic said. “A man of unbelievable energy for work, a brilliant mind, very lucid, someone to whom God really gave incredible gifts. It is hard to find a person that has the combination of being a good theorist, and also a man who has the courage in practice to take responsibility at any given historical moment,” Radovan Bigovic, a theology professor recalled. Head of the OSCE mission to Serbia Hans Ola Urstad said that Djindjic had been a unique and modern politician who had tried to restore Serbia’s image, and ensure that Serbia would become a part of the international community. “After decades of conflict, Djindjic adopted a new approach to the West and the region. The fact that he based his activities on civilized and argumentative dialogue instead of conflict, or even armed conflict, definitely helped him receive a great amount of trust from western leaders and clearly showed that he was a politician of a different quality, who spoke the diplomatic language of Europe and allowed the international community to understand the new reality of Serbia,” Urstad said. The goal of the conference, which was also attended by Vesna Pesic, Latinka Perovic and Cedomir Antic, was to stress Djindjic’s political ideas not only as a politician, but as a person who brought the necessary amount of philosophy and theoretical foundation into his policies.
