Kosovo is threatened with a “frozen conflict” owing to the current situation, says the International Crisis Group. The organization said that there was “a genuine danger of the division (of Kosovo) strengthening on the Ibar river in the north, and of Kosovo becoming a new frozen conflict.” "Kosovo threatened with frozen conflict" “Although there has not been general violence, yesterday’s riots were the first on a larger scale, while Belgrade’s efforts to spread its power to Serb zones (in Kosovo) and the international community and Pristina’s inability to coordinate a counter-strategy suggest that long-term danger is becoming very realistic,” says the IGC report. It adds that Serbia is applying “a sophisticated strategy to undermine the Kosovo state and bolster institutions in Serb zones, while the international community has no clear or coordinated response to it.” The organization has called on NATO, the EU, the UN and all in Kosovo to swiftly establish a counter-strategy in northern Kosovo. The International Crisis Group called on all countries that have recognized Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence to show that “independence is irrevocable,” and on political, economic and other leading officials from these countries to visit Kosovo in ever greater numbers. Since the unilateral declaration of February 17, Javier Solana, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and Carl Bildt have visited the province.
