EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn says Bosnia could sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) in April. Rehn added that he believed in Bosnia-Hercegovina’s European future, and that signing the agreement was possible if all the established criteria were met. Rehn: Bosnia could sign EU deal in April “Bosnia-Hercegovina has a clear EU future with the remaining west Balkan states. That is a process during which every country must individually meet political and economic criteria for membership and adopt all the Union’s laws,“ he told daily Dnevni Avaz. The commissioner reiterated that EU membership “contained over 80,000 pages of legislature,“ adding that that was “some kind of political price, membership, that needs to be paid prior to EU entry.“ “The road to membership requires effort, and also strong political will. There can be no ’special cases’, or exceptions to the rule. The club of EU members is a club of equals, with the same rights, but with obligations. And all members must be ready for something like this,“ he explained. Asked whether he expected the Republic of Srpska (RS) to secede from Bosnia-Hercegovina, Rehn stressed that the Dayton Accords guaranteed the latter’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that any new changes to Constitutional order had to be carried out with the agreement of all parties in the country. “I expect all democratically elected officials in Bosnia’s institutions to respect the Dayton Accords in their entirety. The EU’s motto is “Unity in Differences“. The EU is based on taking a part of states’ sovereignty from them, while carefully retaining their populations’ national, cultural and ethnic identity,“ said Rehn. The commissioner stressed that the EU was working on “removing internal frontiers, not introducing new ones.“ “That’s what we’re offering countries that want to join us—a realistic future where we will share the progress and prosperity that comes from our mutual cooperation,“ he concluded.
