The SVM has condemned an SRS MP’s remarks that clashes could occur in Vojvodina if Hungary recognizes Kosovo independence. Union of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) MPs in the regional assembly asked for an emergency session to be called of the Security Committees of the Vojvodina Assembly and the National Parliament, to discuss Serb Radical Party (SRS) official Milorad Mircic’s comments that inter-ethnic incidents could be expected in Vojvodina communities with majority Hungarian populations. Vojvodina Hungarians slam SRS comments SVM official Sandor Egeresi said that such statements “incited the destruction of inter-ethnic tolerance, and were an inexcusable manipulation and spreading of hate among the Vojvodina population.” “To equate members of a nation in Vojvodina with an EU member-state and its possible recognition of Kosovo is pure manipulation,” said Egeresi. He said that Hungarians in Vojvodina were loyal Serbian citizens and, because of the seriousness of Mircic’s statements, called on the police to guarantee all citizens their right to a peaceful and prosperous future. President of the Vojvodina Assembly’s Security Committee Tomislav Bogunovic said today that the SVM proposal would be discussed very soon, probably at the beginning of next week. Mircic claimed yesterday that a danger existed of incidents breaking out in parts of Vojvodina predominantly inhabited by members of the Hungarian minority if Budapest recognized Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence. “We’ve received that information from a reliable, well-informed source and should any unpleasant incidents take place, the government will bear the responsibility,” the SRS official warned.
