The Slovenian Agriculture, Forestry and Food Ministry is preparing legal grounds to help the fishing sector. Legal grounds are currently being sought at inter-ministry level, said Ministry spokesman Jernej Kovac, as reported by Croatian electronic media, suggesting that Slovenia could sue Croatia for damages incurred with the proclamation of the Protected Ecology and Fishery Zone (ZERP). “Slovenia to sue Croatia for ZERP” The government has decided that it will protect the Slovenian fishermen’s work in the open sea, and that it will compensate them for losses incurred when they had to stay ashore during the fishing season and were left without any catch. “It goes without saying that Slovenia will sue Croatia for all damages caused by Zagreb’s application of ZERP and the violation of the 2004 agreement,” said Kovac. The ZERP came into force for EU members on January 1, but was repealed by the parliament in Zagreb on March 15, in order to end the resulting blockade in negotiations with the EU.
