Javier Solana hopes the "people of Serbia will choose a deep and solid link with the EU" in the coming elections. The early parliamentary vote is yet to be called. It is expected that it will take place on May 11. Solana backs "pro-EU" parties in elections The parliament will likely shortly be dissolved after the ruling coalition failed to see eye to eye on the issues of Kosovo, the EU, and the country's territorial integrity and future international integrations in the context of both. Today, the EU high foreign policy representative said in Brussels that "it is important that the parliamentary elections will take place" and that "this will be a chance for the people of Serbia to choose a way forward". "I hope they will continue to fight for a deep and solid link with the EU," he said. A nearly identical statement was made by Dimitry Rupel, whose country, heading the EU in the first six months of 2008, has recently recognized Kosovo's unilateral secession. "Now that elections are coming, we hope the pro-European forces will win," he told journalists in Brussels ahead of an EU ministerial meeting there. As far as Rupel is concerned, "Serbia has no other possibility but the EU", agencies also reported. "There are encouraging signs that the pro-European forces will win the elections," the Slovenian foreign minister also said. The EU ministers will today discuss the political situation in Serbia, as well as EULEX, a mission Brussels has sent to Kosovo, although Belgrade sees it as illegal and not based on UN Resolution 1244.
