A foreign policy adviser says the EU's protest following the Belgrade riots is a strong warning to the authorities. The EU sent a demarche to the Foreign Ministry yesterday following the attacks on foreign embassies and border posts, which, according to the protest note, individual ministers bore responsibility for, because of their “inflammatory” rhetoric that fueled the riots. Jelica Minic, a member of the Foreign Policy Council, told B92 that the EU protest was very strongly-worded. "EU demarche strong warning to Belgrade" “In the history of our relations with the EU since the democratic changes in 2000, I don’t think we’ve ever received such a harsh warning. The perception is that certain powers in Serbia acted in such a way that the public’s dissatisfaction was even more pronounced, and that one of the consequences of this was the violent conduct of certain groups. It’s understandable that such a perception of Serbia on the basis of this demarche is evident,” said Minic. She said that Serbia needed to respond to the EU protest, but that it should, above all, retain good relations with Brussels. “This is very important for Serbia’s long-term stability and security. We should not seek to sour relations with the EU any further as, sooner or later, they need to get back to normal, as Serbia depends economically and politically on the EU to a large extent,” the analyst pointed out. In its protest note, the EU expressed its concern at the pressure certain media and NGOs in Serbia were being exposed to, though repeated that the Union was prepared to work with Serbia on its future within the European family.
