Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says the destruction of embassies in Belgrade is "completely unacceptable". "I am very worried because of statements from some Serbian ministers, what happened in Belgrade is completely unacceptable. It's damaging Serbia's image abroad," the NATO secretary general told today's Le Monde. NATO chief warns Belgrade against "inflammatory remarks" Everyone must avoid making inflammatory statements when it comes to Kosovo, Scheffer advised, because "now we need to maintain the stability". "I am very well aware that Serbs are finding it hard to accept the declaration of independence, but it is one thing to understand, and quite another to support the people who engage in destructive acts. If a Serbian minister is encouraging these individuals, then that is at the same time dangerous and unacceptable," he continued. As for NATO's soldiers in the province, KFOR, Scheffer told the Parisian daily they were "ready for all scenarios", and could also receive backup from international troops in Bosnia, "if necessary". Another high ranking western official, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, also commented the latest developments in the Kosovo status crisis today. Solana believes that the decision to allow Kosovo Albanians to declare independence against the wishes of Belgrade and Moscow was "inevitable", but also one that will "in the long term, bring more stability to the region". Solana told a German paper that he expected "Berlin to assume the central role in stabilizing the Balkans". "The German contribution to KFOR is very important, for as long as Kosovo cannot take care of its own security. Besides, Germany is giving aid that cannot be abandoned," he specified.
