Russian Chief of the General Staff Yuri Baluyevski says his country strongly opposes Kosovo's independence. In a rare comment on the ongoing Kosovo status crisis, Baluyevski suggested compromise and agreement, rather than unilateral solutions, "as is done in Pristina and some Western capitals that have already announced their readiness to recognize Kosovo's independence." "Nobody has addressed us [seeking assistance]and I do not believe that this will happen," the Russian general said, and added that there were no agreements in the military sector between Russia and Serbia. Baluyevski also ruled out the possibility of increasing the level of alert for the Russian troops deployed near that country's western borders if Kosovo declares independence, the news agency added. "Why should our army increase readiness? I don't see that this is necessary," Baluyevski said.
