Slovenian officials Dimitrij Rupel and Jelko Kacin looked at the first round of the presidential ballot in Serbia. But the Slovenian Foreign Minister Rupel said that he has "no real commentary" regarding the first round of presidential elections in Serbia, adding that he is glad that the elections were held democratically and without problems. Rupel, Kacin comment on Serbian elections “The outcome itself is a result of decisions, which are up to the Serbs themselves, the Serbian citizens. We will wait for the next round. Of course we are very interested in keeping the democratic character of the election process in Serbia. We will accept every result, which the voters choose,” Rupel said. Rupel also discussed the elections with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a telephone conversation yesterday. “We are both content that the first round is behind us. We'll see what the second round brings,” he said, adding that they also discussed the Kosovo issue. "There are no secrets there, we wish to be united in decision which, of course, have not yet been made. We will talk about Kosovo yet," Rupel said. He added that the EU is working hard to make it possible for Serbia to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU on January 28. “The EU supports a democratic Serbia and we will do everything we can to support democracy in Serbia,” Rupel said in Brussels. European Parliament official, Jelko Kacin, who is also a Serbia rapporteur, said that the excellent turnout in the election shows that Serbian citizens are concerned about their future. “The voters know that it is a decision between choosing the European path or return to the past,” Kacin said, adding that elections showed that Serbia is a stable and democratic country with a long political tradition. “I honestly support and applaud the announcements of talks for the abolishing of visa regimes for Serbian citizens,” Kacin added, commenting the visa negotiations that will begin on January 30.
