Zagreb police arrested Croatian Army General Mladen Markac for breaching the terms of his temporary release. On December 27, the HagueTribunal received information that Markac, who is accused of war crimes committed during Operation Storm, had left his registered address in Zagreb to take part in a hunt at Bilogora on December 22, and that the Croatian government had not reported any breach of the terms of the general’s house arrest. The scandal came to light on Tuesday, after Croatian media published photos of the pig hunt that Markac took part in along with other high-ranking political officials. The interior minister was, according to Hague Tribunal rules, meant to supervise and control Markac’s movements and make sure he adhered to the terms of his temporary release. Of further embarassment is that it was Ivo Sanader’s government who, in 2004, provided the guarantees for the general’s release. Markac, together with two other generals, Ivan Cermak and Ante Gotovina, is accused of war crimes against Serb civilians during the 1995 Storm Operation, and his trial is due to begin in the middle of next year.
