A court in a western Serbian town has decided to send a man to jail over the cruel killing of a neighbor's dog. Mioljub Savic, from a village near the town of Valjevo, was initially found guilty and sentenced to three months suspended. Savic, who is a hunter, used his hunting rifle to kill his neighbor's dog, and then tie the animal to the bumper of his car and drag its body for ten kilometers, driving through three villages on the way. The charges brought against him by the prosecution, after a criminal complaint filed by the owner of the dog and an animal rights group, said that he committed the crime with premeditation, without warning, and in cold blood. The case could prove to be landmark in a country where cruel treatment of animals, especially in rural areas, often goes unpunished. New legislation regulating the sector, in line with European standards, is also expected soon.
