Boris Tadic says the parliamentary resolution on Kosovo does not signal a retreat from European integration. “Serbia will be a European country,” the president said campaigning in Subotica last night, adding that Serbia had “said no” to a policy of war and had chosen a peaceful future. Tadic: We won’t give up on Europe He said that the EU Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) would be signed in the next few weeks, and would have both important economic and political dimensions. The president added that Serbia would become an EU member by 2012 or 2014. Tadic expects Serbia to receive candidate status by the end of next year. The president said that Serbia’s politicians would do everything to make sure that Kosovo stayed where it belonged and Serbia entered Europe. He also reiterated that cooperation with the Hague Tribunal was a priority that Serbia would not shy away from. Tadic said that after the presidential elections, Serbia would be a lot more stable and that the government would continue to do its job. Expressing his confidence in a victory in the first round, Tadic said that his first assignment after the elections would be to work on stability, security and a better life for Serbian citizens. “A country cannot be strong without a strong economy, and only a strong and safe Serbia is respected by the world and its citizens,” he said, adding that he would fight for this vision to become a reality. As far as the candidacy of the leader of the Association of Vojvodina Hungarians, Istvan Pastor, was concerned, Tadic said that “it is strange for one ethnic community to have its own candidate in the elections,” and wondered what would happen, hypothetically, if that candidate were to come from Kosovo.
