Sonja Biserko says that human rights are in “absolute remission” in Sandzak. The president of the Helsinki Council for Human Rights in Serbia said that over the last few years in Sandzak, repression had surfaced, leading to an atmosphere that was tearing apart the Bosniak community. Biserko: Human rights “in remission” in Sandzak “Events which have taken place in this region over the last few years are ripe for declaring a state of emergency, should the Serbian government need to do so once Kosovo’s status has been determined,“ Biserko said. She added that an atmosphere of distrust and fear had been created in Sandzak as a result of policies being led in the region over the last several years, as a Muslim enclave. “Unfortunately, neither local political leaders, nor the elite, have shown enough responsibility to deal with the problems in the region,“ Biserko said. She said that the government in Belgrade had succeeded in monopolizing all events in the country, that it was a form of internal agression, and that all of it was going on in the shadow of the Kosovo crisis. “The media window has been closed, as has any other place where one can publicly state or hear different views regarding any issues,“ Biserko said.
