A three-day conference will be held in Brcko in light of December 10 – International Human Rights Day. The conference will be attended by officials representing the families of missing persons throughout the territory of the former Yugoslavia. 17,500 missing in former Yugoslavia The officials will ask the EU to set the solving of the missing persons questions as one other criteria for continuing Euro-Atlantic integrations. Participators in the conference, who have been searching for missing loved ones for many years, said that the countries in the region, and the EU along with them, have not taken enough measures to “humanely and legally solve the question as soon as possible.” The officials said that the United Nations calls for the respecting of international conventions for the protection of human rights. The countries of the region are being asked by the missing persons groups to continue all investigations, criminal charges and punishments related to missing persons cases, regardless of ethnicity. They also called for adequate compensation to be given to the families of victims as well. The families have called on the governments to fulfill their obligations “and in that way, solve the cases of the fate of 17,500 missing persons, and secure legal, social and economic protection for the surviving family members.” The meeting in Brcko will be attended by missing persons organizations from Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The meeting was organized by the International Commission for Missing Persons.
