Head of the Serb List for Kosovo Oliver Ivanovic has spoken to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. The two men, together with UNMIK deputy chief, Steven Schook, discussed security in Kosovo. Kosovo Serb leader consults NATO, UNMIK chiefs After their meeting, Ivanovic told B92 that he had asked Scheffer for a clear picture of the security situation, as well as for measures KFOR was planning in the event of a stormy outcome to events in the province. “I said that I saw no reason for troops to be deployed among the Serbs in the north, as there is no danger there for the Serbs, nor for what few Albanians live there. It’s necessary to secure the Serb enclaves in the central and eastern parts, towards Strpce. A demarcation line has to be set up between the two ethnic communities in Mitrovica, and in Metohija in those enclaves formed by the influx of Serbs over the last two or three years,” said the Kosovo Serb representative. He said that he had received firm assurances from Scheffer that KFOR and NATO had “learned a lesson” from the events of March 17, 2004. “I think that we can rest assured, and as he said, no-one should leave Kosovo because they feel unsafe, KFOR is there to make sure of that,” he explained. During his conversation with Schook, Ivanovic expressed his concern that the Strpce and Novo Brdo municipalities, as well as the three Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo, could come under Albanian control following the November 17 elections, leading to further instability. According to the Kosovo Serb representative, Schook pledged that UNMIK would bear the election results in mind, and make sure that Serbs in predominantly Serb municipalities did not have to undergo any additional upheaval.
