President Boris Tadic met with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in Ankara yesterday. They both expressed the hope that their countries would soon become EU members. Tadic meets Turkish president During the talks, Tadic focused on economic cooperation and added that he was convinced that after today’s meeting of economic delegations with Turkish companies, to be led by him personally, a united interest would be found to increase investment in Serbian industry. The focus of Tadic’s first official visit to Turkey is the enhancement of bilateral, economic, cultural and military cooperation between the two countries. Gul said that the visit would focus on economic and trade relations between Serbia and Turkey. “Turkey and Serbia are important countries in the region, and Tadic is a leader with a vision, and that’s worthy of attention and importance,” Gul said at a press conference. Speaking of the Kosovo situation, the two agreed that a peaceful solution for maintaining stability in the region needed to be found. Tadic informed Gul of the progress of the Kosovo negotiations and said that Serbia would be willing to continue talks in order to find a negotiated solution. Asked of Turkey’s official position towards Kosovo, Gul replied that Turkey was a Balkan country and that Kosovo was a pertinent issue. He said that Turkey wanted to see all problems dealt with in a peaceful manner, so that stability in the region was not compromised. “Turkey will support any solution that ultimately brings peace and stability to the region,” Gul said.
