Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac said in Belgrade yesterday that Serbia is "not ready for NATO". Sutanovac said that the question of whether Serbia should join NATO presents no dilemma, as the country itself is not ready, nor has it received an invitation to join the military alliance. Defense Minister: We're not ready for NATO At a press conference, Sutanovac, a high Democratic Party (DS) official, reiterated that NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) outreach program was "currently the true measure of Serbia's participation in integrating into security structures". The Partnership offers many opportunities for creating ties between the military and other sectors of society, he added. Sutanovac said there was no exact information as to the cost of Serbia joining NATO, but that a rough estimate would be around EUR 1.5bn. He also added that Serbia was already benefiting greatly from membership in the PfP, through donations and training, such as a field hospital, worth more than a million euros, that the Norwegians had donated to the Serbian Army (VS). The defense chief said that the government was aware of the need for greater participation in peace missions, but that parliament was "not willing to send Serbian military doctors to Afghanistan as part of a Norwegian peace contingent".
