The parliament has adopted the Law on the Constitutional Court in its session in Belgrade Saturday. The move will enable for the appointment of judges to take place, allowing for the court to start functioning properly. Parliament adopts Constitutional Court law The work of the Constitutional Court has been blocked for over a year. Now the new law says that a judge selected to serve in this institution cannot be a member of a political party, not can he or she hold any other public or professional office or position, except as professor at the Faculty of Law. The new law envisages procedure on constitutional appeal, a new means of protecting human and minority rights introduced with the new constituting last year, to be applied when rights and freedoms have been denied or infringed upon by a single act or action of state institutions or organizations. Another new feature in the law is the procedure to determine whether the president's actions have breached the constitution. The court will convene when 10 of the 15 judges have been appointed. The parliament will today also vote on government drafts on the asylum law, and will appoint five Constitutional Court judges. The work of the Constitutional Court has been blocked for over a year.

Now the new law says that a judge selected to serve in this institution cannot be a member of a political party, not can he or she hold any other public or professional office or position, except as professor at the Faculty of Law.
