The LSV and the SVM have presented new proposals for Vojvodina’s administrative status today. Under the League of Vojvodina Social-Democrats (LSV) and Union of Vojvodina Hungarians' (SVM) proposal for Vojvodina’s status, the province would have a president, government, ministers and ombudsmen. Vojvodina parties want "provincial president" At a news conference today in Belgrade, LSV President and MP Nenad Canak outlined that the basis of the proposal was “to bring Vojvodina’s position into line with the Serbian system as a whole” and to avoid unnecessary overlapping of provincial and state competencies. “The state communicates directly with local self-government and thus ignores provincial bodies,” said Canak, adding that the proposal did not contain anything unconstitutional. The LSV leader stressed that it had been proposed to form a provincial district in order to prevent Vojvodina authorities becoming centralized. SVM President Ishtvan Pastor stressed that Vojvodina’s Hungarian community considered Serbia to be their nation and “that its prospects matter greatly to us.” According to Pastor, the proposal envisaged the formation of a National Council for resolving matters considered important for preserving national identity. Asked why the proposals had been presented in Belgrade first, Canak and Pastor replied that support already existed in Vojvodina for the proposal, though the national parliament’s consent was necessary for its adoption.
