Dragan Sutanovac says that Serbia is entering “a zone of extreme turbulence” with regards to the Kosovo situation. “I don’t think that December 10 will be the breaking point, but up to then there will be great expectation on the part of the Albanian side. I am afraid that if expectation turns into great disappointment there is a good chance of violence breaking out, first demonstrations, and then danger for the non-Albanian population,” the defense minister told B92. Serbia entering “zone of extreme turbulence” The international mediating Troika is due to submit its report on the Kosovo status talks to the United Nations secretary general on December 10, and Kosovo Albanians have announced that they will unilaterally proclaim independence shortly afterwards. Sutanovac said that there was a possibility of unrest spilling over into south Serbia as well, and in Macedonia, because of the recent problems with “organized terrorist groups” there. “We, as an army, as far as south Serbia is concerned, are getting ready for every possible scenario, even the worst case ones. We do not have any registered terrorist groups in Serbia, we have nothing located that is concrete,” he said. The defense minister added that the military, in the event of unrest in Kosovo following a unilateral declaration of independence, would not do anything independently but would work with and react to decisions made by senior political officials. He said that he had talked to KFOR officials and the NATO Secretary General, insisting that the 16,000 KFOR troops would not allow a repeat of the riots of March 17, 2004. “I think that KFOR will intervene this time. If something happens, it will be very serious. I have a high level of trust in KFOR. I do not expect anything unforeseen to happen, or for them to say that they did not expect demonstrations,” Sutanovac said. Dragan Sutanovac (FoNet, archive)
