Kovacevic said that Milosevic had not understood the international factor and underestimated it, especially the U.S. "Milosevic is the main culprit for our decade of woe, he was not concerned with people’s problems and suffering. He was basically a weak, ignorant person and an untalented politician,” Kovacevic said. He said that Milosevic’s policies were a tale of missed opportunities, adding that the first one was the U.S.’s initial support for keeping Yugoslavia intact. “He could have stopped the military and avoided damaging Serbia’s reputation with operations such as those in Dubrovnik, Vukovar and Sarajevo,” Kovacevic said. Another missed chance, according to Kovacevic, was his failure to come to an agreement over Kosovo with then leader Ibrahim Rugova, which would have given Serbia more authority that it is currently vainly seeking. “I have dedicated my book to our children’s children, so they can see how stupid and irresponsible their grandparents’ generation was, that was able, in such a short period of time, to turn what was, for all its faults, a small, beautiful and peaceful nation into a war zone and a graveyard,” Kovacevic said.
