Zivorad Kovacevic says that Serbia’s political elite is following the ideas of Slobodan Milosevic. “Within these ideas, problems do not get solved, rather other problems are created to hide the original ones,” the President of the European Movement in Serbia said. "Political elite following Milosevic’s example" During the promotion of his new book “America and the Collapse of Yugoslavia,” Kovacevic said that, just like Milosevic, Serbia’s current leaders did not understand international relations. “As if problems like the Hague and Kosovo were not enough, we are now opening new problems with the Republic of Srpska and NATO membership,” Kovacevic said. The former Yugoslav ambassador to the U.S. and mayor of Belgrade said that Serbia’s foreign policy focused solely on Kosovo, rather forming a strategy to enter the extended family of a united European nation. Kovacevic said that Milosevic had not understood the international factor and underestimated it, especially the U.S. "Milosevic is the main culprit for our decade of woe, he was not concerned with people’s problems and suffering. He was basically a weak, ignorant person and an untalented politician,” Kovacevic said. He said that Milosevic’s policies were a tale of missed opportunities, adding that the first one was the U.S.’s initial support for keeping Yugoslavia intact. “He could have stopped the military and avoided damaging Serbia’s reputation with operations such as those in Dubrovnik, Vukovar and Sarajevo,” Kovacevic said. Another missed chance, according to Kovacevic, was his failure to come to an agreement over Kosovo with then leader Ibrahim Rugova, which would have given Serbia more authority that it is currently vainly seeking. “I have dedicated my book to our children’s children, so they can see how stupid and irresponsible their grandparents’ generation was, that was able, in such a short period of time, to turn what was, for all its faults, a small, beautiful and peaceful nation into a war zone and a graveyard,” Kovacevic said.
