Government members have spent the day explaining to citizens the benefits of European integration. The intention was to speak about the EU, but today’s campaign – Serbia still on the Right Path to the EU – was an opportunity for the authorities to find out first hand how hard life is for Serbian citizens. Ministers on benefits of EU membership Representatives do not have a magic solution for the current situation, but Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic promised things would improve, the closer Serbia moved towards the EU. “Next year, we will use the EU budget of EUR 197mn for a project to change lives for the better. Candidate status will increase that sum to EUR 800mn a year, I hope. We will use that money for regional development, agriculture and other needs of our citizens,” said Djelic. Citizens expect EU membership to solve many problems, but they are not sure what will actually happen. The deputy prime minister says that today’s campaign was not part of the pre-election campaign, although none of the other members of the coalition parties joined him, save two other ministers from his own party. Meanwhile, just ten meters away, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s Democratic Party of Serbia were conducting their own promotion of the Declaration of Military Neutrality, while their activists in other towns were explaining to citizens why the country should not join NATO.
