Everyone hopes for a Kosovo agreement, and Germany wants to do everything it can to help, says the German ambassador to Serbia. In an interview with daily Vecernje Novosti, asked whether basing Serbia-Kosovo relations on the East-West Germany model of the seventies as put forward by German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, was Berlin’s own idea or just a way of testing the negotiators, Wolfram Maas denied that it was Germany’s official position. "Germany hopes for compromise" “The aim of Ambassador Ischinger’s suggestion was not to use the German agreement as a draft for solving the Kosovo crisis, but as a method to consider that might eventually lead to an agreement, as it’s quite clear that the two situations cannot be compared,” said Maas. He felt that it would be to no-one’s benefit if the Kosovo question remained unresolved. “Our aim is to make it clear to the sides that it is up to them to reach an agreement. Regardless of the shape of this agreement, this is the best solution for us. In the absence of a compromise, another solution will be found, though I don’t how this would look, nor do I wish to speculate on it,” added the ambassador. In conclusion, Maas said that he did not just what to deal with political issues in Serbia, but Serbia as a whole.
