Athens backs a united European Union stand on Kosovo, Foreign Ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos said Friday. Koumoutsakos emphasized that "the region needs solutions that can stand the test of time, otherwise the problems will resurface again." Greece urges united EU Kosovo stand Noting that Greece is well acquainted with the situation in the region, he said that Athens has had talks with all parties encouraging a productive approach to the process underway in order to find the best solution. "Greece is constantly exerting endeavors with all parties involved in resolving the Kosovo issue in order to find a mutually acceptable solution," he said, adding that a minimum of mutual agreement is needed for peaceful and productive coexistence. "Greece does not believe in humiliation. Complete domination of one party over another has never resulted in stability in history, particularly in the Balkans," Koumoutsakos said. He emphasized that Kosovo is a European issue in which the EU has an important role, which is why it should take a united and joint stand. But the EU reaction to the province's possible unilateral declaration of independence remains one of the unknown factors in the status crisis. Some EU countries, such as Spain, Slovakia and Romania have voiced concern about a recognition of Kosovo without a UN resolution in place, while Cyprus has officially said that it would not recognize the province as a new state under such conditions.
