The trial of Branimir Glavas, accused of war crimes in Osijek in 1991, started afresh yesterday for procedural reasons. After three trials and two parallel cases against Glavas were heard last month before the District Court in Zagreb, one of the judges was subsequently replaced, with Mirko Klinzic taking his place on the council. Glavas faces new trial As a result, Court President Zeljko Horvatovic ordered the trial to start again from scratch, and the prosecution was forced to read out the indictment one more time. Glavas, who was head of the Osijek National Guard Secretariat at the time of the alleged crimes, is accused of the maltreatment and murder of Serb civilians in the Secretariat’s garage, as well as on the banks of the Drava river, where ten Serbs from Osijek were murdered. Glavas’s co-accused are Ivica Krnjak, Gordana Getos-Magdic, Mirko Sivic, Dino Kontic, Tihomir Valentic and Zdravko Dragic. During the previous three trials, both the defense and the prosecution called to the stand over 270 witnesses, while the court yesterday accepted the majority of the proposed evidence. Two parallel cases are being led against Glavas known as the “garage case” and the “sellotape case.” In the latter, the defendants are accused of arresting, abusing, and killing ten Serb civilians in autumn 1991 on Glavas’s orders. The victims’ corpses were then tossed into the Drava river, their mouths having been covered with sellotape. In the so-called “garage case”, the former head of the Osijek National Guard Secretariat is accused of first abusing, then killing Cedomir Vuckovic and Djordje Petkovic in the secretariat’s garage.
