Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic (DS) says Kosovo is a challenge to Serbia's path towards a better future. In his address to the participants of the 17th Annual Convention of the Serbian Unity Congress, in San Francisco, California, Jeremic said that Serbia might become a member of the European Union in five years. Kosovo challenge for Serbia's EU path – Jeremic "Reaching this goal of essential importance is the Serbian government's priority," he told the gathering. Jeremic also expressed his confidence that Serbia will fully establish domestic democratic institutions in the coming years driven by the EU membership incentive, as well as reconcile with its neighbors, further develop its economy, upgrade the standard of living to the European level and carry out a reform of the social welfare system. However, the challenge of the future status of Kosovo is a major obstacle on the path to secure and prosperous future, and threatens to annul everything that Serbia had achieved over the years during which democracy was restored, Jeremic warned. The foreign minister described the ongoing Kosovo talks as being in "a rather delicate phase," which is why the future of Serbia and the Western Balkans as a whole are "completely uncertain."
