NATO Director for Force Planning Frank Boland denied that the organization wanted the Serbian Army to scale down. At today’s NATO Assembly seminar in Belgrade, Boland said that Serbia could have as big an army as it could afford, though he reiterated that over the last few years Serbia had invested very little in its armed forces. NATO – Serbian military cooperation The NATO representative said that the organization did not have any single model for the structure of member countries' armed forces, and that each individual country was responsible for its own military set-up. Speaking of reforms to Serbia’s defense system, Boland said that much had been done, though he stressed that that the Laws on Defense and the Army had still not been adopted. He added that NATO was very involved in the Army’s reform process through joint NATO-Serbia working groups, and through its own military liaison officer in Belgrade. Boland stated that Serbia set aside six percent of its annual budget on the Army, and that that was why it was important for the armed forces to be efficient and under democratic control.
