NATO and European partner nations have launched three-week military exercises in Albania, the largest ever held there. Albania hopes to join NATO next year. Albania hosts NATO exercise The Defense Ministry said Wednesday that 1,100 soldiers from 25 countries — mostly members of NATO and the Partnership for Peace alliance — are participating in the exercises, named Cooperative Longbow/Lancer 07. "Our goal is to further implement NATO training standards in all the armed forces," said Albanian Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu. He said it was an important event "for a country waiting to become a full NATO member." Planning for the exercises started Tuesday at an Albanian army base near the capital, Tirana. A NATO statement said participating countries include Switzerland and Israel, with observers from Morocco, Qatar and The United Arab Emirates. Another 12-day joint NATO military exercise is currently being held in Croatia. Both western Balkan countries, together with Macedonia, hope to join NATO next year and have signed a U.S.-backed initiative, known as the Adriatic 3 Charter to plot a common military strategy. Albania has sent small troop contingents to multinational forces in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Tirana is also considering sending a small force to Lebanon.
