Sociologist Ratko Bozovic is not surprised by the level of neo-Nazi sentiment in Serbia. He said that if you considered the amount of hateful words being heard in parliament, intolerance in the community was not so surprising. "Rise of neo-Nazi popularity no surprise" “When a chauvinist action on the part of an MP ends in nothing more than a public reprimand, then that is real measure of the ties between the community, hate speak and extremism. That is why it is hypocritical to be surprised by the appearance of groups who are fans of the swastika and the holocaust,” Bozovic told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik. He said that incidents such as when Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) MP Marko Jaksic attacked a fellow lawmaker, stating that he had a “Roma or Gypsy mentality,” can only offer more encouragement to extremism. Bozovic said that the fact that Jaksic had received no serious punishment for his actions, was a clear indication that the majority of the parliament was prone to similar extremism and vulgar behavior.
