DS: Elections will not weaken Serbia

Elections should not be postponed because of the Kosovo status process, a spokeswoman for the Democrats (DS) says. “If we say that presidential and local elections in Serbia should not be held by the end of the year rn in the spring of 2008, then we are sending a message to ethnic Albanians and the international community that we expect the status to be settled by that time,” Jelena Markovic of President Boris Tadic Democratic Party said on Sunday. DS: Elections will not weaken Serbia “Should we do that, we would challenge our own standing on the matter and from that moment onwards it would not be clear what we are advocating,” she added. Markovic also reminded that the parliamentary elections were held in January in the midst of the negotiating process and that “nothing spectacular happened then.” According to her, the election of president in line with the new constitution could only strengthen Serbia, rather than make her weak when it comes to Kosovo "or any other matter." Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said yesterday that "time was not right" for a presidential vote.
