Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov does not rule out the possibility that Russia may back a partition of Kosovo. When asked whether Russia viewed paritition as acceptable, the Russian foreign policy chief told reporters in Moscow today that his country was ready to support any solution agreed on by Belgrade and Pristina. Lavrov does not dismiss partition as option EU's envoy in the latest round of Kosovo status talks, Wolfgang Ischinger, rejected the province's division in Vienna Thursday, saying it went against the Contact Group principles. Russia, United States, Germany, France, Great Britain and Italy are all the group's members. According to Lavrov, "the fate of Kosovo must be solved by the sides themselves", in other words, Belgrade and Pristina. Lavrov reminded that talks on the province's future status were ongoing, mediated by the Contact Group Troika. "Negotiations are continuing with the mediation of the envoys of Russia, the European Union and the United States. The aim is to help the sides reach an agreement, and we will support whatever it is on which they reach agreement," Lavrov told Reuters. "Our goal is to create conditions for negotiations, not to create a solution. What Belgrade and Pristina agree on remains the most important," he repeated. Meanwhile, the press service of the U.S. National Security Council announced in Washington Friday that Kosovo will be on the agenda of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Forum in Australia. The APEC conference will be held in Sydney on September 8 and 9, attended by the member countries' heads of state, Itar-Tass reported. The topics will include the situation in Iran, cooperation in the anti-missile defense sector, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and preparations for Russia's entry to the World Trade Organization. U.S. President George Bush will hold a series of bilateral meetings, and also plans to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, whose participation, however, has not yet been confirmed.
