Workplace violence research begins

Law professor Nikolić-Ristanović said that gender equality at work increases productivity and generally benefits the economy.

She said that the best way to avoid gender discrimination at the workplace is through collective contracts within the company.

“An employed woman often does not have the will to press criminal charges,” she said, adding that workplace abuse is hard to prove but can lead to compensation if proven in a court of law.

Coordinator of a telephone help line for gender discrimination, Ljiljana Dobrosavljević-Grujić, said that women have a harder time getting hired than men, get paid less and have more difficulties getting promoted.

“Women are afraid to get pregnant because they think that they will be made redundant and that their position will be given to someone else while they are on pregnancy leave,” she said, adding that Serbia is the only regional country that does not have a gender equality law.

The Labor Law of 2005, however, did improve the situation for women in the workplace, offering further protection against discrimination, sexual harassment, and unequal pay.
