He added that the authorities were pressing the issue of Kosovo so as to divert attention from other events in Serbia, including the privatization of the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), Serbian Electric Power Enterprise (EPS) and military property.Speaking at a conference themed “Necessary Changes to the Serbian Constitution,” held in Subotica Wednesday, Čanak mentioned the contentious issue of Horgoš-Požega highway concession in an attempt to illustrate Belgrade’s attitude towards its northern province of Vojvodina.
Vojvodina’s Assembly President Bojan Kostreš recently accused infrastructure minister and New Serbia leader Velimir Ilić of having, on March 30, made a concession deal with Spanish-Austrian FCC Alpina that is damaging to Vojvodina, which allegedly stands to lose at least EUR 450mn if the contract is implemented.
“It would be logical to grant the Belgrade-Požega stretch, and not add a completed highway linking Horgoš and Belgrade to the deal,” Čanak said.
LSV lawmaker Aleksandar Marton said that Vojvodina was “robbed” of US$ 34bn during the 1990s, which could have been spent building 500 schools and 300 healthcare centers.
Law Faculty Professor Marijana Pavjanić stressed the new Serbian Constitution was only a means to call new elections, since the adopted version was “much worse than all the drafts circulated over the last several years.”
“The relationship with Vojvodina was stipulated more rationally and favorably in all the previous drafts, however, the Constitution itself obviously resulted from a deal, rather a consensus,” Pavjanić said.
