“Today is of historic importance for our relations with respect to defense cooperation which has grown into partnership, as Slobodan Milošević and Ratko Mladić’s heritage is left far behind,” Polt said at the ceremony held by the Serbian Army.

Polt added that new democratic government in Serbia had to pass certain difficult decision so as to “lead Serbian people into the better future.”

“I am convinced that the Serbian Army, under the command of Dragan Šutanovac and Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponoš, will fortify Serbia’s place in facing global security challenges,” Polt stressed.

Ponoš, who also attended the opening ceremony, said that the ODC would be implementing a partnership deal reached with the Ohio National Guard which began ten months ago following the signing of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

Šutanovac said on the occasion that a well-devised educational system is the most efficient way to promote reforms in the defense field, which is why the fact Serbian Army officers were to receive training in Ohio this summer was “of crucial importance.”

Michael Leiden, U.S. Army European Command Director in charge of logistics and military support program, said that the OCD's aim would be to assist the U.S. Embassy in Serbia and Serbia’s goals, as the OCD director would be charged with distributing U.S. aid in defense cooperation projects.
