Government forms National Security Council

After the session, Justice Minister Dušan Petrović voiced hope that the council's forming would enable Serbia to wrap up cooperation with the Hague tribunal "within a reasonable period of time."

Petrović told reporters at a news conference that the council's work will increase the state's capacity to fight organized crime and defend itself against terrorism.

Petrović explained that the Serbian president will chair the council and call sessions, and will set the agenda in collaboration with the prime minister.

The minister went on to say that the ruling coalition is constantly discussing the appointment of a new Security Information Agency (BIA) chief, claiming there was no disagreement in the matter and added that he believed someone would be appointed "within a reasonable period of time."

Petrović reiterated that there was a political will to determine who had been helping Hague tribunal indictee Ratko Mladić hide, adding that as a minister he would always provide support to courts and prosecutions.
